Dionysos Eleutherios: The Liberator
“Wine can of their wits the wise beguile, Make the sage frolic, and the serious smile.” - Homer
"He [Theseus] carried off Ariadne and sailed out unobserved during the night, after which he put in at the island which at that time was called Dia, but is now called Naxos. At this same time, the myths relate, Dionysos showed himself on the island, and because of the beauty of Ariadne he took the maiden away from Theseus and kept her as his lawful wife, loving her exceedingly. Indeed, after her death he considered her worthy of immortal honours because of the affection he had for her, and placed among the stars of heaven the Crown of Ariadne [the constellation Corona]." - Diodorus Siculus
Love is a fickle, fragile thing...but when it sticks, when both people are all in, well, it's a powerful thing. For the last few months, Arden, her love Phil, and I have been planning Dionysos. Originally, I had an idea in my head that Dionysos would have a love slave of the male persuasion, but then I learned something that changed my mind entirely.
These two lovebirds went to London and got themselves engaged.
So, instead of having this be purely an art shoot and a continuation of the series...it would also become part 1 of their engagement session. *glee!*
Designing the Shoot
Our Dionysus, Phil Weinberg, had been growing his hair since last November to get it to the long luscious form it was for the day of the shoot. I truly appreciate dedication of this sort. This is also why the shoot took place so soon after Ares, because with the Boston heat wave, the guy was miserable. I had mercy on him and scheduled it as soon as possible.
Also, Carly Naik swooped in again and created these sensational last minute headdresses which were absolutely stunning in every capacity. It reminded me of the headpiece designed by Stephanie Brownell that Mary Kelley wore in her role opposite Zeus in a shoot a couple of years ago.
Personally, I think people should always wear grape-inspired headdresses. :D
But that's the thing with Carly too, we have such synergy. I tell her I have an idea, and she takes that and makes it into something so otherworldly that my jaw hits the floor each and every time. She is an absolute treasure and I feel so honored to not only have found her, but by the fact that she likes working with me.
Stuff of dreams, this.
But anyways, back to Arden and Phil. Anyone who has been following this blog that Arden Barlow has been on this crazy Olympian journey from the beginning as my go-to MUA. So, for this, it was a delight to have her actually be in front of the camera in addition to one of the leading forces behind it. I also appreciate her discovering the talent that is her now fiancé and being cool with me costuming and photographing him into a lovely ethereal being. (Even though I think that she may have been more enthusiastic than I was about the whole thing, which is considerable because I was pretty much sky high happy for the duration.)
Behind the Scenes
Also along for the ride this time were Chimæric and Nate of Nate Buchman Photography. They didn't have any official roles that day, just there for moral support really, but they snapped a few BTS photos for which I am always grateful.
Without further ado, here are the two lovebirds as Dionysos and Ariadne. Click HERE to view in Hi-res.
