She Delights in Arrows: The Story of Artemis

Muse, sing of Artemis, sister of the Far-Shooter, the virgin who delights in arrows, who was fostered with Apollon. She waters her horses from Meles deep in reeds, and swiftly drives her all-golden chariot through Smyrna to vine-clad Klaros where Apollon, god of the silver bow, sits waiting for the far-shooting goddess who delights in arrows. And so hail to you, Artemis, in my song and to all goddesses as well. Of you first I sing and with you I begin; now that I have begun with you, I will turn to another song. -Homeric Hymn to Artemis Muse: Arielle Kaplan of Inevitable Betrayal Cosplay

It was only a few days after the production of Hermes that plans for Artemis finally fell into place. For years I had been searching for someone who had the perfect juxtaposition of ferocity and grace required for this character, and as has been the case for the duration of this process, the right person came to me at the right time.

I first met Arielle while I was photographing the Upstart Crows of Salem's Production of The Winter's Tale. I came to find out later that Arielle, along with Diana Dunlap and and Max Sklar, runs the Upstart Crows. (She is a woman of many talents.) Carly Naik, the mastermind behind Hermes' footwear, is also a member of the troupe – so connectivity abounds. When I told Carly about my ideas for Artemis, she quickly jumped on board the idea and told me her plans, which we'll get to in a moment.

Most importantly, Arielle is a local actor and cosplayer (see Inevitable Betrayal Cosplay) whose capacity for crafting BRILLIANT femme versions of distinguished male characters caught my eye.

Her femme Han Solo is spot on too, but you should go to her page and check it out for yourself.

So one day, while I was unabashedly stalking her various social media pages, I noticed that she had posted something about HAVING MADE HER OWN LONGBOW. I dropped contents of the cup of coffee I was holding all over myself and instantly asked her if she would be interested in portraying Artemis. Then I popped into the bathroom to clean myself up and revel in my bliss.

Now, don't get me wrong, I had already been considering asking her if she was interested. She is the kind of the person that possesses an enviable strength, something the goddess of the hunt herself would have been envious of. However, Artemis sans bow and arrow just wouldn't be the same...so where before logistically it hadn't yet made sense (there's no way I could've made a bow for this), the existence of the bow brought everything together in shining synchronicity.

Delightfully, Arielle was totally into it. As was Carly.  And now we've come full circle.

Because of Artemis's association to moon lore, I asked Carly if it would be possible to craft some sort of moon that would allow Arielle to sit on it during the shoot. In the end, she not only came up with this lovely Moon Lyra idea, but also crafted Artemis's MAGNIFICENT headdress that will continue to wow me forever.

Behind the Scenes

For this shoot, I was grateful to have Kati Nalbandian on video duty (Part of the Creative Salem team) as well as John Andrews of Social Palates Photography - it's surprising to me that this is the first time that these two have joined me on a shoot of this nature, but I was so grateful to have them!

Thank you to Arielle, Carly, Arden, John, Kati, and Kevin for braving the cold and the slush and making this shoot a possibility. All of you are incomparable.
