A Journey Into Motherhood with Ember LaFuze (NSFW)

When I first met Ember last spring, I was enamored with her vibrance. Lindsey of Siren of the Circle had arranged for a Faerie series at Stickworks in downtown Salem. On a warm May day, Ember, Elise (of Play Craze) and her daughter Harper, Lindsey, and I met for a glorious afternoon. However, that is a story I will tell a bit later. Anyways, the minute I met Ember I knew we had a connection...then she sent me a note.

"Hey Lovely! So, it's a bit too soon to start making announcements, but my partner and I just found out that we're pregnant! Assuming we make it through the first trimester, I'd love to work on a maternity series, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather do it with than you. You have such a gentle, kind spirit, and I really enjoyed our first collaboration experience. Let me know if this is something you might be interested in documenting with me. Sending you bunches of love."

My response:  "Oh heavens yes, I would be so honored."

Little did I know the magical rabbit hole that I was about to tumble into.

Part 1: Lots of Glitter (28 weeks)

Like most faeries, Em and I are attracted to sparkly things.

Part 3: Any Day Now (36 weeks)

Now, the final installment of this series is extraordinary for a special reason – the opportunity to work with the incredible Brett Kelley of The Art of Brett Kelley. He and I collaborated before on The Shadow of a Life She Almost Lived, featuring Laurel Marsh as the automaton.

He is also the busiest human I know...because he happens to not only be wicked talented but also quite personable. I wasn't certain if he would be able to take on this project with me. His response when I asked:

"Oh, cool! What is the timeframe on that? Right now I'm kind of drowning in work as of the present..." <---artists, take heed, he earns every iota of busy and deserves the world.

I assured him that it wouldn't be for another 7 weeks and watched as he cyber-breathed a sigh of relief. Then, he took it upon himself to find us magical studio space in Easthampton, MA and then all we had to do was count the days.

Here's a Behind the Scenes from the adventure, shot by myself and my partner in artcrimes Chimæric.

I let Brett take over the body design, although we ran out of daylight before he could properly finish it. Regardless, he did a masterful job and I adore how these photos came out.

Baby LaFuze is literally due any day now...and that will be its own story to tell.<3

As you can see, Ember is made of magic...and this is only the beginning of our collaborations. I'm so excited to see what we'll do next.
