About Joey

Joey Phoenix is a Salem-MA based portrait photographer with a fascination with the mythological and the surreal. She has spent the last three years working on her photo project – The Olympians – a series which focuses on archetypes found in Greek myth and the inherent magic of every human being. She has one more shoot to go until its completion.

Joey picked up a camera for the first time in 2011 as a way to add visual oomph to articles and blog posts, only to realize soon afterwards that the camera was becoming part of her arm. Since surgical removal wasn’t a possibility, she decided to roll with it.

With a deep love of well crafted stories and visual narratives, Joey experimented a great deal in the early years in a project called The Evolution of Time - a concept based photo series exploring the relationship between humans and temporal reality.

She also spends a lot of time photographing faeries in the wild.

In addition to her fine art portrait and concept art, Joey is also for hire for:

In 2014, Joey added Videography to her repertoire when she joined up with Creative Salem. Since then, she has covered dozens of events and crafted video features for a number of local creative professionals and entrepreneurs. She hopes to someday make a documentary about guinea pigs.

In addition to these visual offerings, Joey has been, and will always be, a writer first. She is currently working on her first book – which has much to do with her life as an athlete prior to realizing she was, in fact, an artist. If you would like to read some of the stuff she’s written up to now, check out the Writings and Publications page. Or just go read the Blog

When Joey is not photographing things that interest her, filming fire spinners, or writing about the magic of human existence, you can probably find her volunteering at MSPCA at Nevins Farm (certified goat cuddler and guinea pig fashion photographer), making noise (some might call it music), setting up awesome light shows with Retonica, or with her nose stuck in a book.

She currently lives in Salem, MA with her muse and five guinea pigs - Nutmeg, Sassafras, Sigrid, Max, and Dangerous Beans.
